Mutations Guide

Mutations multiply Stand income — after the board works

In Roll a Fisherman, mutations are Gold-paid trait rolls that can turn an ordinary Stand fish into a much higher Cash earner. Players use a Mutation Machine (or equivalent mutate flow in the live UI) to spend Gold on a fish they already own. Outcomes are RNG: better labels raise income, weaker rolls still cost Gold, and nothing guarantees the trait you wanted.

This guide covers Gold budgeting, observed mutation labels, the Coral Zoey half-cost perk, and when mutating is a smart spend versus dumping everything into permanent Luck upgrades. Pair it with Fish Income for Stand placement, How to Roll for Dock quality, and Getting Started if your early loop is still messy.

Treat every non-code number below as observed from September/October 2026 play and community reports. FISH X SPEEDI can retune costs, labels, and UI text after patches — confirm the live client and skim Updates after big drops.

Gold sinks that compete with mutating

Gold is scarce early and mid game. The shop upgrades that fight for the same wallet are:

Gold sinkWhat it improvesWhen it usually wins
Fishing SpeedHow fast Dock workers catchShort sessions / offline catch volume
Catch LuckCatch quality feeding the StandWhen Commons clog inventory
Mutation LuckOdds / quality of mutation outcomesAfter you actually mutate fish
Roll LuckFisherman roll qualityWhen Dock slots need better hires
Mutating fishPer-fish income traits on the StandWhen Stand earners are already solid

Mutating a fish does not replace a weak Dock. If your Dock is still Commons and your Stand holds tutorial trash, Gold into Fishing Speed or Catch Luck usually raises Cash/minute more reliably than gambling a mutation on a fish you will replace tomorrow. Redeem Gold codes first (GOLD, UPGRADES) on the Codes Hub, then decide whether the next tick is Luck or a mutate attempt.

How the Mutation Machine flow works

Exact button labels can shift after UI patches, but the observed loop stays stable:

  1. Collect fish from Dock workers into inventory / holding.
  2. Identify a fish worth investing in — preferably one already earning well on the Stand, not a throwaway Common you are about to swap.
  3. Open the Mutation Machine / mutate interface and select that fish.
  4. Pay the displayed Gold cost.
  5. Accept the RNG outcome and check the new trait label plus the fish’s income readout.
  6. Place or keep the mutated fish on the Stand so the trait actually prints Cash.

If the fish never returns to a Stand slot, the mutation was a cosmetic vanity project. Income only matters when the fish is equipped and ticking. Revisit Stand composition the same session you mutate — details in Fish Income.

Observed mutation labels (community / play reports)

Players and footage from the September/October 2026 window repeatedly call out these trait labels on mutated fish:

Observed labelWhat players report
ShinyCommon early mutation look; income uplift vs base fish, usually smaller than late labels
PixelDistinct visual style; reported as a meaningful mid-tier income bump
GalaxyHigh-end look; community reports describe large Stand income jumps when applied to strong base fish
GlitchedExtreme outlier reports — income can jump dramatically (examples in public footage include very high per-second readouts on otherwise ordinary species)

These names are observed / reported, not an official FISH X SPEEDI balance sheet. Multipliers are not published as a clean table in-game documentation, so treat screenshot income as conditional on base fish, Rebirth multipliers, and Stand slot state. A Galaxy or Glitched trait on a weak fish still underperforms a plain high-tier catch on a clean board after Rebirth.

When comparing two Stand candidates, read the live Cash/second (or equivalent) after placement rather than trusting the mutation name alone. Names help you prioritize which fish to keep; numbers decide the swap.

Mutation Luck still leaves RNG

The Gold upgrade labeled Mutation Luck improves mutation-related outcomes. It does not remove randomness. Spending every Gold tick into Mutation Luck before you have a mutation budget is backwards — you need both attempts and a better roll table. A practical pattern:

  1. Stabilize Dock + Stand Cash flow.
  2. Bank a mutate budget (enough for several attempts, not one all-in).
  3. Buy a Mutation Luck tick when the next mutate batch is imminent.
  4. Mutate your best keepers, not inventory clutter.
  5. Re-check Stand income and bank again.

If a patch renames or splits Mutation Luck, trust the shop tooltip in your client over any outdated wiki sentence.

Coral Zoey — half mutation Gold cost

Coral Zoey is an observed mid/late hire with a perk that matters specifically for this page: mutations cost half as much Gold. Community roster notes put her hire near ~25M Cash (confirm live shop price). That perk does not make bad RNG good, but it doubles how many mutate attempts you get from the same Gold pile.

When to prioritize her:

  • You already mutate often and Gold is the bottleneck, not Cash.
  • Your Dock can absorb a high Cash hire without delaying a critical Rebirth threshold.
  • You compared her to other Legendaries on the Tier List and Players roster and still want the economy perk.

When to wait:

  • Your Stand is still Commons and you have not finished early Rebirths.
  • You need raw Dock power more than cheaper mutates (some Legendaries win on catch quality alone).
  • You cannot afford ~25M without emptying the bank one click before a Rebirth button lights up.

Coral Zoey is a mutation-economy hire. Buy her for the perk plan, not because the name looks cool in a trade screenshot.

Priority order: stabilize first, mutate second

Dumping all Gold into mutations while the Dock is Commons is the most common mid-game trap. Follow this order unless a live event forces a temporary exception:

  1. Dock — fill slots, Equip Best, climb past Homeless/Rookie fillers (How to Roll).
  2. Stand — replace weak earners every session (Fish Income).
  3. Core Gold — Fishing Speed / Catch Luck until catch volume and quality feel stable.
  4. Rebirth — bank Cash for permanent multipliers and slots (Rebirth).
  5. Mutation Luck + mutate budget — only after steps 1–4 are not on fire.
  6. Coral Zoey — when Cash and mutate volume justify the half-cost perk.

Mutations amplify a working machine. They do not invent one. A Glitched trait on a fish you never place still earns zero.

Session checklist for mutation-focused play

  1. Redeem any new codes (Codes) — Spins and Gold both matter.
  2. Roll / hire, then Equip Best on the Dock.
  3. Collect fish → audit Stand → swap weak earners.
  4. Check distance to the next Rebirth before spending Cash on a luxury hire.
  5. If Stand income is healthy, allocate Gold: Luck tick or mutate attempts — not both if the wallet is thin.
  6. Mutate keepers only; trash Commons go unmutated.
  7. Log out with mutated best fish on the Stand so offline earnings capture the uplift.

Master mutations after the Dock and Stand already print Cash, and Roll a Fisherman’s late economy opens up without burning every Gold coin on vanity RNG.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Should I mutate fish before my Dock is upgraded?

Usually no. Stabilize Dock and Stand first, then spend Gold on mutations. Mutating Commons you will replace wastes Gold that Fishing Speed or Catch Luck would use better.

What mutation labels have players reported?

Observed community and play labels include Shiny, Pixel, Galaxy, and Glitched. Income jumps can be dramatic on higher labels — confirm live readouts on your Stand.

What does Coral Zoey’s perk do?

Observed perk: mutations cost half as much Gold. Hire cost was reported near ~25M Cash — verify the shop before buying.

Does Mutation Luck guarantee a good trait?

No. Mutation Luck improves outcomes but mutation results stay RNG. Budget for multiple attempts.

Which Gold upgrades compete with mutating?

Fishing Speed, Catch Luck, Mutation Luck, and Roll Luck all spend the same Gold pool. Balance permanent upgrades against per-fish mutate costs.

Do mutated fish need to sit on the Stand?

Yes for income. A mutated fish only raises Cash while placed on an active Stand slot. Place it after you mutate.
